Benthic Invertebrate Assessments

Azimuth completes fisheries and benthic invertebrate (aquatic bugs visible to the naked eye) assessments to gain a better understanding of the ecological health and ascertain the implications of development on the aquatic environment. Our staff complete fish sampling using an array of sampling gear (including electrofishing), and complete benthic invertebrate monitoring in accordance with the Ontario Biological Biomonitoring Network (OBBN) and BioMAP (Biological Monitoring Assessment Program) protocols. Our studies aim to confirm existing aquatic habitat quality and establish a 'baseline' biological condition from which to compare background information or future monitoring. Such assessments may be required for a Certificate of Approval (CofA) or Permit to Take Water (PTTW) from the Ministry of the Environment, or for Federal Fisheries Act approvals from conservation authorities, or Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).
